A lot happens in the first chapter.  For me so much was going on
that it was a little difficult to follow.  I'll admit I like to be spoonfed a
bit, at least in the beginning.  The visuals are great and very
detailed, but again I'm always looking for the story.  As a reader I
would read on because my curiousity was piqued, but I'd want that
pay off pretty quickly

A reluctant hero. A prophecy. A healing quest. Classic elements of
classic fantasy, elements that in Les Bill Gates's Windows on our
World launch an intriguing story in a compelling fashion. As the
quest only begins when this chapter ends, it's impossible to know
how Gates fulfills the promise of his opening. But it's an opening
that leaves the reader eager for more.

After a rather slow start, the pace picks up in this fantasy, which
also has aspects of a thriller.  Good sensory details create a sense
of place, important even for a fantasy. Characters are immediately
interesting and distinctive.

In this chapter, The Squire wakes up in Thorland, where he is
destined to fulfill the prophecy of the skull being made whole once
more - after which he would resume his rule there. That The Squire
nearly lost his life to vicious wolves and a maddened boar, before
ever embarking on his quest, promises a gripping adventure. His
rescue, by the giant eagle, twice, and by Helge - to whom the eagle
had entrusted his care, suggests magical intervention. The
existence in Thorland, of the wicked wizard, Gordeve, and the good
one, Tobin, her brother, confirms this as a struggle between good
and evil. Further peril is anticipated as The Squire and Helge travel
to Tobin’s castle, where they would be introduced to the golden
skull, and receive instructions for the quest.
